Favourite Sweets

Another list that anyone reading will be horrified with no doubt. These are my favourite sweets of all time. I didn’t include chocolate, biscuits, cake etc, just what you’d “normally” classify as sweets in the UK. There’s a lot of liquorice on this list in retrospect!

10

Fruit Salads and Blackjacks

I used to stuff my face with these all the time as a kid, my parents would know because I’d have a jet black tongue from the blackjacks.

9

Milk Bottles

I have no idea why these taste so good, but I’m always eating these first out of a mixed variety bag.

8

Kopp Kops

My Nan and Uncle used to get me these all the time as a kid. They’re liquorice/aniseed flavoured, sprinkled with sugar. What’s not to love? They kind of remind me of sweets you’d get for a sore throat nowadays.

7

Cola Cubes

Another classic that my Nan and Uncle used to get me all the time as a kid whenever I went over there. They’d always be stuck together and become really sharp in your mouth.

6

Liquorice Wheels

I used to gorge on these during my lunch breaks of my first proper job when I was 18. I’d go out, get a bag of these + some coca cola. Devour the lot and continue. One day I did this, I got a migraine right afterwards and ended up throwing up what can only be described as the most deepest shade of black possible, as if a demon was just released. Felt better right afterwards though!

5

Dropfruit Duos

These are the most recent sweets I’ve tried and I love them. Me and my wife would get a bag any time we’re in the Netherlands. They’re a mixture between Wine Gums and … well, Wine Gums with liquorice. Very addictive.

4

Sherbet Fountains

Any Brit that is reading this is probably saying “What the fuck?” when scrolling to this. I love sherbet. I love liquorice. It’s a match made in heaven. I’d usually end up eating the stick first and necking the sherbet though. I don’t have the patience to suck a liquorice stick for 30 minutes.

3

Pear Drops

I don’t know anyone that doesn’t like pear drops, I usually end up chewing them to the horror of people around me.

2

Midget Gems

Another classic from my childhood. There’s two types of midget gems, hard and soft. They’re both good but the hard ones are the best and the most old school. Packed with flavour and you’ll finish the bag in one sitting for sure.

1

Pink and Blues (Jelly Spogs/Buttons)

This is the king of sweets, in my unprofessional opinion. My Nan and Mum would get these for me any time I was at a market, and they’re something I’ve been nibbling on ever since. I was actually chomping on these only yesterday while writing this. They’re liqourice inside (Seeing a pattern here…) with bits of crunchy … beads? bits? on the outside. Much like midget gems, there’s two versions, very soft chewy ones with big bits or harder ones that you can eat easier with smaller bits. The latter is the best and most traditional. If you ever want to get on my good side, bring me a bag of these and we’ll be friends forever.
