“The Disk of AWESOMENESS V2”

It’s very rare that my Dad ever goes through the loft to clear it out, but when he does there’s usually a few golden nuggets of nostalgia that end up falling out.

This is one of the CDs I likely burned when we used to travel together to work between 2007 – 2011ish.

These were the things I wanted to know:

1. What was on it? I assume it’s music.
2. When did I make this?
3. Did I have good music taste?
4. How many of these tracks do I still like and are any on my current playlist?

It took me a while to look what was on it, because I haven’t had a CD drive in yeeeears at this point. So, I borrowed my Dad’s external DVD drive and loaded it up.

I spelled “Disc” wrong =’)

Yep, clear as day, it’s a audio CD.

Interesting fact: The Date modified says 01/01/1995, which is actually not the date this CD was burned. I’ve since learned that this is because when Windows burns a disc, it uses logic introduced in 1995 via Windows 95 to give it a placeholder timestamp, as a modification/created date is required when writing data. Neat.

Of course, all the names weren’t visible either which I now recall was standard for music CDs. WHEN DID DISCS BECOME RETRO? That flew by fast.

I attempted to try and figure out when I made this disc, but to no avail. I even went as far as getting some advanced tools which can check the disc’s metadata.

I even tried to find the date the disc would’ve been made to get a rough guess, using the codes within the disc itself. Nothing.

So I moved onto what was on the disc, which actually revealed a lot. It’s clear I made this in 2010 due to some of my choices.

Anyway, without further ado, here is the contents of “The Disk of AWESOMENESS V2”. Overall I’d say I had pretty good taste and most still hold up!

Track 01 – Black Sabbath – Iron Man (1970)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? No

Wouldn’t be my first choice for a Black Sabbath song, but great nontheless.

Track 02 – Adelitas Way – Invincible (2009)

• Still like it? No
• On my current playlist? No

This was played very often to me at the time, mostly because I played A LOT of Smackdown VS RAW 2010. It was also the theme song for WWE Superstars.

Track 03 – Foo Fighters – Wheels (2009)

• Still like it? No
• On my current playlist? No

Probably one of the more weaker Foo Fighters songs, I’m actually very bored of hearing Foo Fighters apart from a few select songs.

Track 04 – Sick Puppies – Anywhere But Here (2007)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? It is now!

I forgot how much I enjoyed listening to Sick Puppies. I haven’t listened to them in probably 10+ years. It turns out a lot of their songs are region locked on Spotify? Shame.

Track 05 – Disturbed – Shout 2000 (2000)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? YES

I will never stop loving Disturbed, and this is definitely one of my favourites.

Track 06 – Black Sabbath – Paranoid (1970)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? No

Paranoid is great, but I just feel like there’s better songs from Black Sabbath.

Track 07 – Shinedown – Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (2006)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? It is now!*

I’m very, very surprised I put a Christmas song on this disc but here we are. I do remember really loving this song for some reason. I’ve added it to my Christmas playlist.

Track 08 – Matthew Harwood – Closer to Home (2005)

• Still like it? No
• On my current playlist? No

It’s a good song, but you can tell it was a video game inspired track. Not the best.

Track 09 – AC/DC – Thunderstruck (1990)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? Yes

How can you not like AC/DC? 10/10.

Track 10 – U2 – The Electric Co. (1980)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? It is now!

I forgot all about this song. I had a biiiig U2 love between 2004-2008 but this song clearly kept going with me to 2011. Neat. Re-added.

Track 11 – Fear Factory – Zero Signal (1995)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? No*

I’ve never stopped loving the Carmageddon soundtrack. It’s one of the absolute best and it still amazes me it made it onto an MS-DOS game in the mid 90s. I wish the instrumental version (The one I love) was on Spotify, as I’d have it on my playlist.

Track 12 – Tenacious D – Tribute (2001)

Tenacious D is great, but I feel like I’ve listened to them 10,000 times at this point.

Track 13 – Ozzy Osbourne – Crazy Train (1980)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? No

I love Ozzy and everything he’s made, but I’ve listened to this too many times to have it on my playlist.

Track 14 – Papa Roach – I Devise My Own Demise (2006)

• Still like it? No
• On my current playlist? No

I had a big Papa Roach love in the late 2000s / early 2010s. They’re okay, but their music hasn’t stayed with me at all.

Track 15 – Dire Straits – Sultans of Swing (1978)

• Still like it? Yes
• On my current playlist? Yes*

This is always on my “Chill” playlist. Such a good song to vibe to while doing other stuff.

This was fun! I didn’t expect to be graced with this relic of my past.
